We built WhizArts to collect as little as possible. This page lists exactly what we receive when you read, comment or write to us, how long we keep it, and who else is involved. “We” means the WhizArts team that runs this site.
The short version
- Reading needs no account and sets no cookies.
- No analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels, no third-party scripts.
- Comments store only the name and text you type. Contact messages are deleted after 90 days.
- Server logs are kept for about two weeks for security, then deleted.
When you read
You can read every page without signing in. Like any website, our web server records standard access logs: your IP address, the page you asked for, your browser’s user agent and the time. We use these logs only to keep the site secure and running, and they are rotated and deleted after about two weeks.
To slow down spam, we also look at IP addresses briefly in memory to rate-limit comments and messages. Those addresses are not written to the site’s database.
When you comment
A comment needs a name and the comment itself, nothing else; we don’t ask for your email address. Both are stored so moderators can review the comment. If approved, your name and comment are shown publicly on the post. Comments that are never approved are deleted automatically after 30 days.
When you contact us
The contact form asks for your name, email address, a topic and your message. We use them only to read your request, reply to you and deal with what you asked. Messages are deleted automatically after 90 days.
Writer profiles
Writers choose what appears on their profile, such as a name, portrait, short bio and website link. That information is public by design, as are the posts they publish.
Cookies
Readers and commenters get no cookies from WhizArts. The only cookie we use is a session cookie that keeps the site’s administrators signed in while they manage it.
Other services involved
We don’t sell or share your information. A few outside services are involved in delivering the pages themselves:
- Google Fonts. Our typefaces load from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com. Your browser contacts Google to fetch them, which shares your IP address and browser information with Google.
- Unsplash. Photos on the home page load from images.unsplash.com, which likewise receives your IP address and browser information when your browser requests them.
- Let’s Encrypt. The site is served over HTTPS using certificates from Let’s Encrypt, so the connection between you and WhizArts is encrypted.
Those providers handle that information under their own privacy policies.
How long we keep things
- Server access logs: about two weeks.
- Contact messages: 90 days.
- Comments that are never approved: 30 days.
- Approved comments and published posts: for as long as they stay published.
Keeping it safe
Every page is served over HTTPS, so whatever you send through the comment and contact forms is encrypted on its way to us. Unapproved comments and contact messages are visible only to the site’s administrators, and the admin area sits behind a sign-in.
Your choices
You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, including a comment you wrote. Writers can ask for individual posts or their whole blog to be removed. Send any of these through the contact page and choose “Privacy request”. Tell us enough to find the data, such as the post link and the name you used.
Changes to this policy
If the way we handle information changes, we will update this page and the “last updated” date at the top.
Questions
Ask anything about privacy through the contact page. It is the only way to reach the WhizArts team.
